Factions of Fate

Factions of Fate is a hidden identity board game designed for 6-12 players, with an estimated playtime of 30 to 60 minutes. It draws inspiration from the 2005 Japanese board game "Shadow Hunters," offering a unique and engaging experience.

Development Insights

As the author and sole creator of Factions of Fate, I've poured over 700 hours into its design, development, and refinement. The game has been in active development and undergoing rigorous playtesting since 2023.

All the character card art was meticulously crafted using Forge UI with Stable Diffusion, employing the Illustrious model "Vauxz Merge 2.5D - 3D" to achieve a unique visual style. This project represents a significant personal investment and a passion for creating engaging tabletop experiences.

Gameplay Overview

At the beginning of the game, each player is secretly dealt a character card. This card reveals their allegiance to one of three factions: the Renegades, the Sentinels, or the Unbound. Each character also has a unique starting Health Point (HP) total and a secret special ability that can be used throughout the game.

Player turns consist of several phases. First, the active player rolls two six-sided dice (2D6). The sum of the dice determines which location on the game board the player's character moves to. The game map is a 3x3 grid of locations, each with distinct effects that are resolved immediately upon a player's arrival. For a detailed list of location effects, please refer to the official game website: fof.702squad.com.

After resolving the location's effect, the player may choose to attack another player. The attack range includes the player's current location and any orthogonally or diagonally adjacent locations. A special location, "World's End," situated in the center of the 3x3 grid, has no inherent effect but serves as a strategic nexus. Players at World's End can attack characters at any other location on the board, and conversely, can be attacked by players from any other location.

Factions & Win Conditions

  • Renegades: The Renegades achieve victory if all Sentinel characters are eliminated.
  • Sentinels: The Sentinels achieve victory if all Renegade characters are eliminated.
  • Unbound: Each Unbound character has their own unique, secret win condition detailed on their character card. These conditions can vary greatly, adding an element of unpredictability to the game.

Card Decks

The game features three distinct card decks, drawn when players land on specific locations:

  • White Cards: These cards generally provide beneficial effects, such as healing, utility items, or defensive bonuses.
  • Black Cards: These cards introduce more chaotic and often detrimental effects, including direct damage to other players or disruptive global events.
  • Green Cards: These cards are focused on information gathering, allowing players to secretly learn clues about other players' identities, helping them identify allies and enemies.
